Pongal

Pongal - the four-day-long harvest festival of South India, known as an Indian version of western 'thanksgiving', is one of the major festivals celebrated in Chennai. Commemorated in the month of January, the festival marks the end of the traditional farming season and represents reverence for a new beginning.

Celebrated to convey appreciation to the Sun God for providing the energy for agriculture, part of the Pongal celebration involves the boiling of the first rice of the season consecrated to the Sun - the Surya Maangalyam. As a part of the festival ritual, people offer sugarcane, turmeric, and sheaves of paddy, newly prepared jiggery, vegetables and pulses to the Sun god, the Earth and the cow.
